New Hampshire Housing believes that home buyer education is an important first step to purchasing your own home. Although face-to-face learning is the best opportunity for an interactive and meaningful experience, we understand that classroom-style education may not fit everyone's need, lifestyle or schedule. If you are unable to attend a "live" class, there are several Web sites that offer online first-time home buyer education. While this type of education cannot take the place of the classroom experience, online sessions may provide a satisfactory learning experience that you can participate in from the comfort and privacy of your own living room. Listed below are several online resources you may wish to explore. The NeighborWorks® Online Home Buyer Education Program is offered as a fee-based online course. Upon completion of this program, you will receive a "Certificate of Home Buyer Education" to present to your lender. The online course takes approximately 8 hours to complete and there is a course fee as part of the registration process. Go to the NeighborWorks® Online Home Buyer Education Program. MGIC is one of the nation's leading providers of private mortgage insurance. Private mortgage insurance benefits consumers by helping them achieve home ownership sooner with low downpayment loans. To take advantage of its free home buyer education resources, visit www.mgichome.com. Freddie Mac, one of America's biggest buyers of home mortgages, offers a free online consumer guide to buying a home, visit www.freddiemac.com/corporate/buying_and_owning.html. If your lender requires that you attend a "HUD approved" home buyer education class, then the online resources listed above may not be acceptable. Please check with your lender to find out which classes are appropriate for the mortgage program you are approved for. For an entertaining way to test your financial fitness and to participate in learning that feels more like fun, visit the New Hampshire State Treasury's "Financial Football Training Camp".
